Two Trains Running

Feb 20 – Mar 20, 2027

About the Production

August Wilson's Two Trains Running is set in 1969 Pittsburgh, in Memphis Lee's diner, a gathering place for a community navigating the turbulent currents of the Civil Rights era. The play unfolds over the course of a week, as a small cast of characters wrestles with questions of identity, justice, faith, and survival. Two institutions loom at either end of the block: a funeral home and a numbers runner's establishment. Between them, in Memphis's diner, the talk is rich, searching, and alive.

One of Wilson's most intimate and politically charged works, Two Trains Running belongs to his ten-play American Century Cycle, one play for each decade of the twentieth century. This production marks Rovin Jay's fifth production from the Cycle in eight years.

Rovin Jay directs this production for the Long Beach Playhouse Mainstage, running February 20 through March 20, 2027.
