The journey
To the City of Bones
At the play’s heart, Aunt Ester sends Citizen Barlow on a spiritual voyage across the water to the City of Bones, the reckoning that brings him face to face with himself.
About the Production
August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean is the first chronological entry in his ten-play American Century Cycle, set in 1904 Pittsburgh. It follows Citizen Barlow, a young man haunted by guilt who seeks spiritual redemption from the 285-year-old Aunt Ester, keeper of the people's souls.
Directed by Rovin Jay at the Long Beach Playhouse Mainstage, February–March 2026.
"Jay's direction deserves commendation for refusing to water down language, ideas or strong personalities for a 21st century hypersensitive audience. The production trusts Wilson's words and trusts its viewers. That confidence pays off."
